AI and Satellite-Driven Health Forecasting was a collaborative event organized by the IEEE ComSoc Student Chapter and the IEEE Women in Engineering Student Branch Affinity Group of the University of Peradeniya. Held at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the session featured Dr. Thilanka Munasinghe, who explored the use of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) and NASA satellite data to predict dengue outbreaks across Sri Lanka. Field visit to the Kothmale Hydro Power Station and dam provided participants with a rare and valuable opportunity to gain firsthand experience of one of Sri Lanka’s significant hydroelectric power stations. The visit included in-depth discussions on the operations of the facility, its importance to the country’s energy grid, and the engineering marvels involved in hydroelectric power generation. This immersive experience offered students practical insights into sustainable energy production and the technical intricacies of managing a large-scale power plant.

The session equipped participants with the knowledge to create standout CVs, optimize LinkedIn profiles, and understand the skills needed for career success. This event represented a major milestone in professional development and effective networking.

The event welcomed over 80 Advanced Level female students from Kandy district schools, aiming to empower them with leadership skills and enrich their STEM knowledge. Distinguished speakers delivered lectures on engineering and inspiring girls in STEM. The program featured a practical session on electronic components and circuits, a guided tour of the engineering faculty, and hands-on Arduino projects. The top three circuit designs received prizes, and all participants were awarded gifts. The event successfully inspired young women to pursue STEM careers, supported by an enthusiastic volunteer team.
