IEEE Student Branch of University of Peradeniya

The Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Student Branch of the University of Peradeniya (IEEE SB UOP) chapter was established on the 19th of July 2001 with the help of IEEE senior members and dedicated student members. IEEE SB UOP mainly focuses on the benefits of the students with IEEE. Peradeniya student branch is the first-ever IEEE student chapter established in Sri Lanka, and it is one of the great and very active student branches in the IEEE community. 

IEEE SB UOP has organized many events to facilitate the students in many fields of interest including Telecommunication, Robotics, Electronics, and Power & Energy. Also, these events undoubtedly supported the development of social and professional skills. of the participants. Workshops, field visits, webinars, and innovative competitions are important events organized by IEEE SB of UoP throughout its journey. Most of the workshops were conducted by famous companies/organizations like Ceylon Electricity Board (C.E.B.), Dialog, and Huawei. The field trips to the M.D.F. board manufacturing company, Galle S.V.C, Hambantota wind power plant, Heladanavi diesel power plant, Laxapana hydro power plant, and Norochcholai coal power plant are remarkable memories to the participants. Also, the talks were conducted by distinguished resource persons. 

Another significant milestone of the student branch was increasing the strength of its digital presence. A website for the IEEE of UoP was first launched in 2010 by the IEEE executive committee of 2010 headed by Mr. B.L.D.S. Balasooriya. Prof. Lilantha Samaranayake, the Chairman of IEEE Sri Lanka Section (2010), and Dr. A. Atputharaja, the student counselor of the IEEE Peradeniya chapter, gave their guidance to the student committee. It was a remarkable milestone because it won the IEEE Region 10 website contest in that year.
